Benefit for Brian Thompson

Paul Thompson opened Big Harry's Tavern on Fort Bragg Road in 2001, and since that time he has held fundraisers and benefits for countless charities and causes, i.e. breast cancer, brain injuries, veterans at the state nursing home and Special Olympics. He has never turned away anyone in need or anyone down on their luck.

Now, Brian Thompson needs help. He is 3 years old. He has been diagnosed with leukemia. He is Paul Thompson's youngest grandson, and the son of Jonathan and Sabine Thompson, parents of two other sons. Medical bills are mounting for the family, including those for the child's father who suffered a heart attack in January.

A poker run/music benefit weekend is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at Big Harry's Tavern, with the poker run set for Sept. 12 and entertainment by the Dirty Water Band. The benefit continues on Sept. 13, starting at noon, with entertainment being provided by local artists such as Bob Steele, Dan Speller, Mahalia, Randy Gabbert, Rick Brigman and Paddy Gibney. Food will be provided for donations.

As you may or may not know, our brother and band mate, Chris Cox, was in a motorcycle accident last week, and he has had complications since, BUT, is on the road to recovery and will be in the hospital for some time to come. There will be two benefit concerts in Fayetteville to try and raise money to help Chris Cox cover his bills while he is hospitalized and out of work. The first will be hosted by Hadez (formerly FUBAR) on Raeford Rd on the 19th of September. The second will be on the 25th of September at The Rock Shop. There will be local and regional bands providing the entertainment, 50/50 drawings and merchandise will be raffled at both events. Please come out and support this cause.

On Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-25), the Fayetteville Downtown Alliance will host the 9th annual Glory Days event. The Annual Glory Days Festival in Fayetteville, NC, honors our strong military heritage. There will be family oriented activities for everyone, including arts, crafts, and food vendors.

This year Fayetteville will again host the Field of Honor where we will behold a beautiful display of thousands of American flags, each honoring a brave member of our Armed Forces. The flags are flying at the Airborne Museum and extend into the future site of Veterans Park. This living display of heroism serves as a patriotic tribute to the strength and unity of Americans, and will honor all who are currently serving, those who have served, and the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifice for our nation’s security and freedom. Opening dedication of the Field of Honor was at 11am on Saturday, May 9, 2009.

Event Schedule – Monday, May 25, 2009 - 10am-5pm
Festival Park, 225 Ray Avenue, Fayetteville, NC

10:00 a.m.—Travlin’ Lite will get you on your feet with inspirational lyrics to classic rock and contemporary Christian sounds.

11:00 a.m.—Irie Muse is an exciting band from Fayetteville that plays an eclectic mix of reggae, jazz, and rock. They opened Glory Days last year with a great set.

12:00 noon—Kenny Huffman and Workhorse features folk-inspired and country-inspired rock. Huffman writes songs in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp, telling stories about laid-off factory workers, cars, women, and how things used to be.

1:00 p.m.—Paddy Gibney and Bill Aberye are probably the most popular duo on the Fayetteville music scene. Paddy’s originals and traditional Irish pub songs and Bill’s virtuoso fiddle represent an irresistible combination.

2:00 p.m.—The Heritage Restoration Chorale is an ecumenical singing group from Cumberland Co. dedicated to the preservation of the Negro Spiritual and other music of the Black experience. Their performances, including one at historic Constitution Hall in Washington, D. C., have won them critical acclaim.

3:00 p.m.—Bobby Joe Swilley and the Modern Knights Band are masters of oldies, especially rockabilly. Their eponymous album has the official “Kiss of Approval” of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
